Cycling Piedmont: Bike and Wine

This is a region to be enjoyed!
Rolling green hills, with the white peaks of the Alps as a backdrop, cycling through the cradle of the ‘slow food’ movement, along the famous Gavi, Barolo and Barbaresco vineyards. Taste the many regional delicacies: the spicy ‘Bagna Cauda’, fine chocolates, an infinite variety of cheeses and salami and of course, the king of truffles, the famous white truffle of Alba. The lands of the Langhe and Monferrato, still to a great extend unknown to many, are quite special. Here you will find lots of good food, good wine and you will stay in many luxurious and unique accommodations.

Activity Level: Moderate |  Mileage: 240 KM | Daily Average: 40 Km

Duration: 8 Days – 7 Nights

restaurant Da Felicin (best choice, a little expensive) Osteria dei Catari (unformal place, nice, great gourmet), restaurant La Salita.
You’ll spend the first night in a nice suite deluxe at Palazzo Boeri, 200mt far from hotel Felicin. It’s a former monastery which has got pretty wide rooms (for sure the wider rooms of the whole trip) offerinf a gorgeous view of Langhe and Alps. Panoramic pool outside. WiFi available from ground 0, password: “giardino”.
You just have to walk back the main location (hotel felicin) placed close to the parish church to get the reception desk and restaurant for breakfast and dinner.

ALTA LANGA

Day 3 – Alta Langa crossing – 66,3 Km shortcut available

We have drawn a loop which includes most of the best roads in Langa. Which is the best spot for a panoramic pic-nic? In Diano d’Alba, at km 41,4 you’ll find some benches and a potable water tap for a good pic-nic spot. (If you’d like a pic-nic, buy food supply in advance at Gallo d’Alba since you won’t find any shop there, just a couple of café and a small restaurant. Better you do shopping it until 12,30 as supermarkets bakeries and groceries close from half past noon to 3,30 pm.)
Ride
Due its long section mostly on climbing road by km 13 to km 31 (more than 11miles), it could be considered a “medium to challenging stage”.

Included Dinner*
This evening you’ve an included dinner right to the farmhouse in Torre Bormida. Vincenzo “ninefingers” is a very nice person and his wife’s a great chef. He loves to introduce the best local food in an original way. You can find a good choice of different Barolo and Barbaresco bottles in his “carta”. Vincenzo also produces a great salami.
*Wines and extras are excluded.
Overnight
Farmhouse La Costa, Torre Bormida. Pool available outside. Open WiFi available (weak service from the rooms, better at dining room).

AQUI TERME

Day 4 – Moving to Acqui Terme – 56,8 Km shortcut available

Vineyards again…
Ride
That’s a serie of hills where climbs sometimes aren’t short but challenging because steep; since you’ve to ride continuously up and down, italian riders call this kind of track “mangia e bevi” (eat and drink). We suggest to stop just after the cemetery of Rocchetta Palafea. There you’ll find some tables, benches and a potable water tap. (Buy food supply in advance since you won’t find any shop there. Do shopping in Monastero Bormida; anyway, do it until 12,30.)
What to see
That’s a new track we did to reach the spa town founded by Romans 2000 years ago. You’ll ride several nice hills getting between the wine area of Acqui Terme. Dolcetto (red wine), Brachetto and Moscato (sweet wines) are the most important grapes by that land. The castle of Bubbio. The monastery of Monastero Bormida. The trompe l’oeil of Rocchetta Palafea. The warm spring of Acqui Terme.
Included Dinner*
We’ll shuttle you for dinner, this evening, to bring you uphill, at farmhouse Cascina Marcantonio to Clara, the “Little General”. Your evening there will begin with a cooking class to prepare some typical courses. That will be simple enough to be memorized, so you can easily redo it at home. Clara is a nice chef and a keen, instinctive teacher even if she doesn’t speak English at all!
Enjoy a selection of superb wines taken by their own production.
Overnight
You’ve a double room reserved at hotel Roma Imperiale, a nice lodging placed in a quiet, charming site 1km far from town. Pool available outside. WiFi available.

GAVI

Day 5 – Moving to Gavi – 59,9 Km

Today’s a first step towards Liguria region. You’ll reach the sweet hills where Cortese it’s grown. This is a kind of grape from which they produces Gavi white wine, a very delicate wine, excellent next to sea food, appetizers, etc. Road dotted by many old castles on the go. We usually set a pic-nic right at the feet of the best preserved one, placed in San Cristoforo.
Close to the hotel (4km far), after riding you can visit one of the biggest Outlet clothes with lots of the best brands as well Prada, D&G, Versace.
Ride
Rolling hills rolling hills, rolling hills. You just have to be noticed about the last steep stretch (that’s short, just 700mt) before to get the lodging, at the end; but you’ll see, the struggle it worthes it…
That’s a medium-level track.
Included Dinner*
We’ve reserved for you a charming dinner right to the hotel’s restaurant: La Gallina. In a good weather day, ask for a table outside, immersed by vineyards and quite far from town or villages, or leave your elegant evening inside sitting in such an informal lovely separate building which was the farmer’s barn!
*Wines and extras are excluded.
Overnight at hotel Ostelliere, for sure the best lodging of the trip. You won’t find something like that elsewhere. Wine tasting to the amazing underground cellar is available with reservation. Wellness area with sauna, external pool and a very warm service complete the opera! WiFi available.

CINQUE TERRE

Day 6 – Ligurian stage – 69,9 Km

Ride
A brand new track which approaches the first hills of Appennins. The ride begins on an easy light climb for more than 40 km, then you’ll face two main climbs, always on backroads. We have just to warn you about the last two and half km: being on a main road it could be a little busy.
Dinner
For dinner, you’ll be shuttled to Nenno, an hamlet far 11km from the hotel, to restaurant Gargantua, named to be one of the best place of that area.
Overnight
Hotel Birra, take his name from the small brewery that shares the same courtyard.

FINALLY THE SEA!

Day 7 – Finally, the sea! – 56,2 Km

That’s the nice ride which reaches the Ligurian Sea. You’ll have the first view of it from Uscio, but it needs to get Camogli to enjoy one of the best panoramas of the whole coast.
Ride
That’s an easy track. Just a few climbs, the first one to Laccio, which is easy; the second one, after Ferriere, is composed by a few short steep stretches at the beginning. Enjoy the longer downhill of the whole trip, between Passo Scoffera and Ferriere: 11km of easy bends placed almost totally under the shadow of bushes. Just take care in case of humid asphalt: it could be slippery.
Overnight at hotel Casmona, a classic hotel downtown.
Suggested Dinner. Have a gorgeous sea food dinner tonight, at Restaurant La Camogliese sitted on their amazing wooden terrace right on the sea.
