Maremma is the new frontier of fashionable tourism in Tuscany. Before the last war it used to be a marshy, forgotten by gods land. But once the drying of the marshes was completed it gave birth to a flourishing agriculture. In the past decades it has also been discovered by tourism and by wine makers. Its beaches have replaced Viareggio in the “In” crowd and the hinterland with its olive trees covered hills and its medieval boroughs is an uncrowded, unspoilt yet magically beautiful land. It is also the land of the Etruscans, the mysterious population that, before the Romans, colonised central Italy. Monumental tombs and sacred roads carved in the soft, golden “Tufo” rocks are hidden treasures to be discovered and towns such as Pitigliano and Sorano are an amazing view in the setting sun. Last, but not least, the Morellino di Scansano and the Montecucco are becoming part of wine list in fashionable restaurants.
