Via Francigena – WEEK 8

from  690,00

From Montefiascone to Rome

Montefiascone can be easily reached by train from Viterbo, however the train station is far out of town and you need a taxi to reach your hotel where you will find all the material you need for your trip: hotel vouchers, the detailed description of the walking and the GPS maps. You will also be told where to go to receive a benediction should you desire one before you start on your way. This is one of the richest week of the whole route with beautiful, pristine landscapes, Etruscan and Roman remains, papal palaces and thermal pools.

  1. MONTEFIASCONE Day 1 – Arrival in Montefiascone

You can reach Montefiascone by an hour train ride from Rome or from Viterbo. The town is famous for the local white wine “Est Est Est” .However in town there are many other important things worth seing. Do not miss the frescoes in the church of San Flaviano.

  2. VITERBO Day 2 – Montefiascone – Viterbo -Distance 18 km Walking time: 4h

The route unfolds along the Bolsena lake, with beautiful views of the lake which, being of volcanic origins is very deep. Near Viterbo you will pass the Bagnaccio thermal pools where it is fun to soak in milky-green steaming waters. Viterbo is a nice small town and offers insights into real Italian life style as it is away from any tourist circuits.

  3. CAPRAROLA Day 3 – Viterbo – Caprarola – Distance:18 km Walking time: 6h30

There is an official alternative route to the one in the plain. In the Middle Ages it was meant to avoid unsafe, marshy areas where Malaria was a real risk. The alternative route we have chosen is slightly longer, but passes across a vast unspoiled area.

  4. SUTRI Day 4 – Caprarola – Sutri – Distance: 16 km Walking time: 4h30

Again we disregard the official, crowded route in favour of an alternative mountain road. We walk on a ridge, discovering wide views on both sides in a rugged landscape of deep valleys and narrow gorges. Sutri is a charming town with an ancient well preserved amphtheatre.

  5. CAMPAGNANO DI ROMA Day 5 – Sutri – Campagnano di Roma – Distance: 26,5 km Walking time: 7h00

At the exit of town, do not miss the Madonna del Parto chappel, an ancient pagan temple which was turned into a christian church and host some very interesting frescoes representing pilgrims walking. Past midway, a small detour will lead to the Monte Gelato waterfalls.

  6. ISOLA FARNESE Day 6 – Campagnano di Roma – Isola Farnese – Distance : 21 km Walking time: 5h00

The most important sights of this day are the Madonna del Sorbo Sanctuary and Veio, an Etruscan archaeological site which is, however very poorly kept and run down. La Storta is a suburb of Rome and as such is not particularly interesting actually quite unpleasant. We therefore prefer to spend the night in a small hamlet perched on a cliff 5 km before.

  7. ROME Day 7 – Isola Farnese – Rome – Distance 25 km Walking time: 5h30

Walking into a large capital city is a difficult undertaking, however we have managed to avoid most of the traffic ridden Via Trionfale walking through two major parks: the Insugherata and Mt Mario park.

What happens if I can’t walk / cycle a stage?

If you find the stage too long or if for any reason you cannot walk at all for one day, let us know the previous week and we can arrange for you to go for a short stretch or for the entire stage with the luggage transfer . In some cases a small fee will be asked and you can pay it directly to the driver.

When is the best time of year?

Generally speaking the best season is certainly from April to October; however, it varies with each stage:
– You can only cross the Alps(week 1) from June 15th to September 15th
– The Appennino mountains (week 4) are more pleasurable from mid May to the end of September
– We suggest that you avoid walking among the rice fields (week 2&3) in full summer

How does the baggage transfers work?

Every morning you leave your luggage at the reception of your accommodation, better with a name-tag and you will find it at your arrival at the next accommodation. It has to be delivered by 2pm

Do you provide GPS files for all days?

Yes, on request we can provide GPS files, but we will still supply the paper description just in case your GPS does not work!
